Glossary - Football verbs

Football is a very popular sport with many terms and meanings. Talking about football can help you learn many new words or phrases. This glossary contains both American terms and British terms. The most common verbs used in football are score, kick, and tackle.

A goalkeeper acts as the goalkeeper. He must ensure that he's not touched by any defenders from the opposing side. Football also has a rule that at least two players must be present between an attacker, and the goal line.

Definitions of football tactic

There are many different football strategies. These strategies can either be used to win the ball, or score goals. Some tactics are more effective then others. One example is the give-and go tactic. This is a basic tactic for passing. In this technique, the ball is passed from one player to another in the open space between midfielders and defensive line. This tactic allows a player with the ball, who may lose his defensive marker or get a return pass, to advance towards the goal.

The high press is another strategy that can be used to score. High press is a tactic that involves grabbing the ball from opposing teams high up on the pitch and using a series coordinated movements to win it. This tactic is most effective when the ball is in the possession of the team but the opponent cannot score immediately. This tactic is often used by the fullback. Another form of high pressure is the inside- or outside running of teammates after a series passes.

Definitions of football kickoffs

There are many types and styles of football kickoffs. Some are standard kicks while others are onside kicks. In either case, the team that kicks the ball must have five players on each side of the field. Two players must be located outside the yard-line numbers, and the other two must remain between the inbounds lines. One player must also be inside the end zone. As one of the five players, a free kick holder counts.

In American English, Kickoff is a noun. However, in British English, it's an adjective. The word can also be used verbally in both languages.

Definition of illegal blocking

An illegal block occurs when a player blocks an opponent above the waist. The opponent should be able to move freely regardless of whether the block is horizontal or vertical. These blocks are more common during kick-offs. A "holding" is another type of illegal block. If a player holds onto a player's shirt excessively, there is a ten yard penalty.

This block infringes on the blocking rule for players on and off the field. The opponent can block while the ball is still within his zone. If the opponent is below the waist, the blocker must make contact. Otherwise it will be a high-block.
